I’ve been teaching art for 5 years at University High School in Spokane Valley, Washington, but have been in the arts field for my entire life. I started as a set painter, then became a graphic designer and finally worked as an art director in advertising before having my two children and going back to school to get my teaching degree. I always knew I wanted to teach, and the only thing I ever wanted to teach was art!
My philosophy of teaching art is, to put it simply: Process Rules! I love teaching secondary students how to go through the creative process, from thumbnails, to small studies, to final art, giving them multiple chances to learn from mistakes. Once going through the process student work comes out better because they’ve learned from any mistakes and gained confidence through the process. At the elementary level the process is always more important than the outcome whether they are working on a project from scratch or coloring a worksheet.
I hope you enjoy looking through some of the projects that I’ve done with my students. I’ve tried to give you everything you will need to teach the lessons by looking at the blog post only, but if you’d rather spend a few bucks and have it all figured out for you be sure to check out my TpT store.
